Accessibility remodeling makes a house easier to live in when getting around gets harder. Mulberry Creek Construction widens doorways for walkers and wheelchairs and sets grab bars where you need a hand. We rebuild bathrooms and kitchens around the way you move now, and we take on ADA doorway work for businesses. We work about 150 miles around Woodward, across northwest and western Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City metro.
In many homes, the trouble starts in the bathroom. The tub has an edge you have to step over, and there is nothing solid to grab. We can replace that tub with a walk-in tub or a low-threshold shower. We handle every trade on the job, so you have one point of contact.
Tell us about the room or space you want to change and where it is. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Aging in place means staying in your own home as you get older. Home modifications for seniors can start small, with a grab bar or a wider door. About 1 in 6 people in Woodward County are 65 or older, by the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. In Major County, it is about 1 in 5.
It is easier to plan these changes before you need them. Done ahead, they fit into one project on your schedule. Before our visit, jot down what gets hard each day: the tub, the toilet, a narrow door, a high shelf. That list shapes the plan and the written estimate.
Homeowners often ask about stair lifts first. The bathroom and the doorways deserve a look too, since you use them many times a day. We show you what each change involves before any work starts.
Some people call it a handicap accessible bathroom, and some call it an ADA bathroom. The goal is a bathroom that fits the way you move. That can mean a walk-in tub or a roll-in shower in place of the old tub. It can also mean a comfort-height toilet and grab bars where you reach for them.
Grab bar installation starts with solid wood behind the wall surface, either a stud or added wood called blocking. At a toilet, the ADA Standards call for a bar on the side wall and one behind it. The side bar runs at least 42 inches long, and the back bar at least 36 inches. Those are rules for businesses, and they make a good layout guide at home.
A wheelchair also needs room to turn. One option the same standards allow is a clear circle 60 inches across. In a small bathroom, that can mean moving the vanity or a wall. If the whole room needs work, we fold these changes into a full bathroom remodel.
For businesses and public buildings, the 2010 ADA Standards call for a clear opening of at least 32 inches. You measure it with the door open 90 degrees, from the face of the door to the stop. Measure your own doors the same way. Start with the bathroom door.
We take out the old door and trim, then cut the opening wider. A new header spans the top, sized for the load the wall carries. Then the wider door goes in, and a light switch beside it may need to move. If you live in town, the city's building permit office can tell you whether the job needs a permit.
For commercial property, the ADA Standards cover alterations as well as new buildings. The building owner or an architect sets the list of doorways and restrooms to change. We build to that list, and the quote spells out each change. Tenant improvements and facilities maintenance fall under our commercial remodeling service.
