Kitchen, Bathroom and Accessibility Remodeling in Moore

About a third of Moore's homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Some still have their first kitchen layout and a hall bath with a tub you step over. About two in five went up in 2000 or later, and the newest follow the city's 2014 wind rules. Each kind of house brings its own remodeling questions.

What kind of homes does Moore have?

Moore sits in Cleveland County on Interstate 35, between Oklahoma City and Norman. The 2020 Census counted 62,793 people here. Census estimates put the city at about 25,000 homes, and about 85 percent are detached single-family houses.

More of Moore's homes date from the 1970s than from any other decade, about one in five. The 1960s add another 16 percent. Those houses are all more than 45 years old now. At that age, the original cabinets and plumbing are often due for replacement.

The median Moore home dates to 1987, and about one in five went up in 2010 or later. City planning records show new subdivisions still coming. Cardinal Landing, south of SE 19th Street, was planned for 492 homes. The city approved a third phase of Sonoma Lakes in 2024.

Remodeling a home built under Moore's 2014 wind rules

The National Weather Service rated the May 3, 1999 tornado F5 and the May 20, 2013 tornado EF5. Both cut across Moore. In 2014, the city added high-wind rules for houses to its residential code.

The rules call for a hurricane clip or framing anchor at every rafter-to-wall connection. Exterior walls must be fully sheathed in plywood or OSB. Garage doors must be rated for 135 mile per hour wind.

Those rules reach inside the house, too. In these homes, some interior walls are braced wall lines tied into the roof framing. Before one comes out for a bigger kitchen, have an engineer check it and ask the city's permit office. We build that step into the plan for a whole-home remodel or an opened-up kitchen.

Who issues remodeling permits in Moore?

Permits come from the Community Development Department inside Moore City Hall. Its Building Permits and Inspections division covers residential work. The city's page says building permits are required for most residential remodels.

If you are not sure whether your project needs one, the city's Inspections Division can tell you. You can apply for a permit and follow its inspections on the city's online portal.

Moore uses the 2018 International Residential Code and the 2020 National Electrical Code. The city and the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission both amend them. Moore's amendments call for an insulation inspection after the rough-in inspections and before drywall goes up. On a kitchen opened to the studs, that inspection is one more step in the schedule.

Kitchen and bathroom remodeling in Moore's older homes

In a 1960s or 1970s Moore house, bathroom remodeling often starts with the tub. A common change is a tub-to-shower conversion with a low threshold, or a walk-in tub. Blocking goes into the wall before the tile, so the grab bars have solid wood behind them.

Many kitchens from those years are closed off from the living room. We can take out a wall and move the plumbing and wiring the new layout needs. If the wall carries weight, an engineer sizes the beam that replaces it. You deal with one point of contact for the whole job.

If someone at home uses a walker or a wheelchair, accessibility remodeling can widen doorways and add grab bars. Planning these changes before they are urgent gives you more choices. Moore lists the 2017 ICC A117.1 accessibility standard among its adopted codes. It shapes doorway and restroom work when a business needs ADA access.

Moore FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Moore

A few of the questions we hear most around Moore. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (580) 216-9022

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Moore?
Often, yes. The city's building permits page says permits are required for most residential remodels. If moving a tub or a toilet is part of the plan, ask the Inspections Division what your job needs. Some inspections happen while the walls are still open, so the question comes before work starts.
What does a kitchen or bathroom remodel cost in Moore?
It depends on the size of the room and how much of the layout changes. In an older Moore house, what we find behind the walls can move the number. The finishes you choose matter too. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Can a wall come out in a Moore home built after 2014?
Sometimes. Homes built under the city's 2014 wind rules can have interior braced wall lines tied into the roof framing. An engineer can say whether a wall can come out and what replaces its bracing. Talk to the city's permit office about the change before work starts.
Do you remodel rental houses in Moore?
Yes. Census estimates show about a third of Moore's occupied homes are rented. For landlords we handle turnovers between tenants: flooring, paint, fixtures and repairs. Each job starts with a look at the unit and a written estimate.
Is Moore part of your service area?
Yes. Our work reaches about 150 miles from Woodward, and the Oklahoma City metro sits inside that range. We take on remodels in Moore homes of every age. Call or text (580) 216-9022 to set up a time to look at your project.
