More than three in five Yukon homes were built between 1960 and 1989, Census estimates show. The median home dates to 1979, which puts it past 45 years old. Some still have a closed-off kitchen and a hall bath with a tub you step over.

Yukon started as a railroad town in 1891. Czech settlers began arriving around 1898, and the town still hosts the Oklahoma Czech Festival each October. Main Street carried Route 66 through town, past the flour mill. In 1960, Yukon still had only 3,076 people.
Then Oklahoma City annexed land nearly all around Yukon in the 1960s, the Oklahoma Historical Society notes. Workers from the city came for a smaller-town life. Yukon grew from 8,411 people in 1970 to 17,112 in 1980.
Much of the new housing went up on the south and east sides of town. Census estimates date nearly a third of Yukon's homes to the 1970s alone. City plat records show Canadian Heights grew in stages: a first plat in 1959, an eighth addition in 1978. Growth has picked up again: the Census Bureau estimates 27,615 people in July 2025.
Permits in Yukon come from the city's Development Services office. It issues building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits for homes and businesses. The same office inspects the work for code compliance as it goes.
The city's page says a building permit application goes in with a complete set of plans, including a plot plan. Each trade has its own residential permit, and each fee schedule lists remodels. Inspection requests name the stage, such as framing or the final.
The city's inspection page lists the codes in use, starting with the 2018 International Residential Code. Which permits a remodel needs depends on what changes. Development Services can answer that before work starts.
About 83 percent of Yukon's homes are detached houses, by Census estimates. In some from the boom years, the kitchen sits behind walls, apart from the living room. We can take a wall out and move the plumbing and wiring the new layout needs.
A load-bearing wall needs an engineer to size the beam that takes its place. That check comes before any wall comes down. You keep one point of contact for the whole job.
Hall baths from the 1970s can be small, with a tub you climb over. Swapping that tub for a low-threshold shower is a common bathroom remodeling request. We set wood blocking in the wall before the tile goes up, so grab bars have something solid to hold.
Census estimates count about 4,600 Yukon residents age 65 or older, 18 percent of the city. About the same share report a disability. The city's Dale Robertson Center runs weekday programs for residents 55 and older.
In a 1970s house, hall and bath doorways can be tight for a walker or a wheelchair. Accessibility remodeling can widen those doorways and add grab bars where you need support. A walk-in tub or a curbless shower may fit where the floor allows.
It helps to plan these changes before you need them. Oklahoma ABLE Tech, the state's assistive technology program, has a loan program that lists home modifications. Ask the program whether your project fits.
