In the 1950s oil boom, Laverne picked up the nickname "the Oil Capital of Northwest Oklahoma" and grew fast. By Census estimates, more than half of the town's homes went up in the 1950s or the 1970s. The median Laverne home dates to 1966, against 1980 statewide. Houses from those years often come with a small, closed-off kitchen and a bathtub you have to step over.

Most Laverne homes are detached houses, by Census estimates. About a fifth went up in the 1950s, during the oil boom, and about a third in the 1970s. Close to 9 in 10 were built before 1980, against about half statewide. Fewer than 1 in 10 were built in 2000 or later.
The Oklahoma Historical Society puts Laverne at 1,269 people in 1950 and 1,937 in 1960. The 2020 Census counted 1,223, more than any other town in Harper County. That comes to more than a third of the county's 3,272 people.
For a remodeling contractor in Laverne, the plan starts with the age of the house. When a wall comes out to open a closed-off kitchen, the plumbing and wiring behind it may need updates too. If that wall is load bearing, an engineer looks at it first. Bathroom remodeling in a 1970s house often adds storage and trades the old tub for a walk-in shower.
Laverne posts its town code on the town website. The code says a building permit comes before work that alters or repairs a building. Work the adopted building code exempts is the exception. For houses, the town uses the International Residential Code as Oklahoma adopts and amends it.
Under the code, building permit applications go to the Town Superintendent, and the town's Board of Trustees approves them. Leave time for that step in your schedule. Work on plumbing, electrical, gas or mechanical systems has its own permit, issued by the town's Building Official.
Whether your project needs a permit depends on the work, so ask the town office before anything starts. Town staff can answer that question, and we point you there. If worn pipe or old wiring turns up behind a wall, we show you and talk through the change first.
The 2020 Census found someone 65 or older in more than a third of Laverne households. Statewide, the share was about 3 in 10. Houses from the 1950s and 1970s often have narrow doors and a tall tub wall. Both get harder to manage with a walker or a wheelchair.
Accessibility remodeling can widen a narrow doorway and add grab bars set into blocking in the wall. The old tub can give way to a low-threshold shower or a walk-in tub. We plan these changes with you ahead of time, so the work happens on your schedule.
The same changes fit farm and ranch homes outside town. Wheat, hay and cattle are the main farm products around Laverne, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. Laverne Public Schools covers about 834 square miles, drawing students from Harper, Ellis and Beaver counties. Our range takes in that farm country, out to Rosston, May and Buffalo.
Laverne sits where US 283 meets State Highway 149, in southwestern Harper County. The railroad reached the new town in the spring of 1912. Two hotels built that year, the Fox and the Clover, are on the National Register of Historic Places.
From town, Rosston is about 10 road miles north on US 283. Buffalo, the county's other town of about 1,000 people, is about 22 road miles away. Lake Evans Chambers, a fishing lake the state wildlife department built in 1965, lies west of town in Beaver County.
Older commercial buildings in town may need interior work before a new tenant moves in. We handle commercial remodeling for small commercial spaces, including tenant improvements and ADA doorway widening. Repairs and facilities maintenance for business properties are part of that work too.
